The 1906 U.S. Open was the 12th U.S. Open. The golf tournament was held June 28–29, 1906, at Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest, Illinois. Alex Smith won his first U.S. Open title by 7-strokes over his brother Willie, the 1899 champion.

Willie Anderson, three-time defending champion and club pro at Onwentsia, was the heavy favorite entering the tournament. He trailed Alex Smith by two-strokes through 36-holes and by three after the third round, but an 84 in the final round dropped him back to 5th place. Smith posted rounds of 73-74-73-75 for a total of 295, a new tournament record and the first sub-300 winning score. Not only did his brother Willie finish in 2nd, his brother-in-law James Maiden tied for 3rd.

For the first time no player from the inaugural U.S. Open in 1895 played in the tournament. Horace Rawlins, the winner of the first tournament, had played in every U.S. Open since then but did not play this year.
