The 1899 U.S. Open was the fifth U.S. Open. The golf tournament was held September 14–15, 1899, at Baltimore Country Club in Baltimore, Maryland. Willie Smith recorded a record 11 stroke victory for his first U.S. Open title.
Willie Smith dominated the championship, shooting rounds of 77-82-79-77, the only player to record three sub-80 rounds. He did not score worse than a 7 on any hole in the championship. Val Fitzjohn, George Low, and Bert Way finished tied for second, 11 strokes behind.[1] Smith's margin of victory was the largest in the U.S. Open until Tiger Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 shots. Smith's brother Alex, a future two-time U.S. Open champion, finished in 7th place.
