111 West 57th Street is a supertall residential project by JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group in midtown Manhattan in New York City. The building will be developed in the existing Steinway Hall.[1] The building will rise to be 1,428 ft (435 m),[2] making it one of the tallest residential buildings in the United States and the world. Upon completion, the tower will also hold the record as the skinniest skyscraper in the world, surpassing the Highcliff in Hong Kong, China. The tower will have a width-to-height ratio of 1:23.[3] As of June 2014, excavation at the site is ongoing in preparation for the construction of the tower.[4]
The skyscraper was designed by SHoP Architects. The north side of the tower rises directly up to the pinnacle of the building. On the south side of the tower, a series of setbacks appear as the tower rises. As the height of the building increases, the setbacks eventually thin out, with the tower "disappearing into the sky."[5][6]
