.club is a generic top-level domain (gTLD), that was delegated to the DNS root zone on January 18, 2014.[1] Domains with the .club designation were released for general purchase on May 7, 2014,[2] and in its first eight months of general availability, .club has sold over 174,000 domains.[3][4]

Background

.Club Domains LLC filed their application for the .club gTLDs on January 12, 2012, the opening day for applications for ICANN’s new gTLD program.[1] Two other companies, Merchant Law Group LLP and Donuts Inc, also applied for the name.[5] Club Domains LLC won the .club TLD in the first private auction held for new gTLDs,[6] entering the auction and backed for the launch of the company by $7 million from 27 investors.[7]

History

The general market launch on May 7, 2014 registered 32,000 names in the first day.[2] As of August 29, 2014, .club became the first new generic top-level domain to sell more than 100,000 domains, making it the best-selling new domain extension.[8] As of February 25, 2015, .club has sold 174 thousand domains.[9]
