Oscar Ribas Reig (born 26 October 1936 in Sant Julià de Lòria[1]) was the first prime minister of Andorra in 1982.[2] He twice served as head of government, firstly from 8 January 1982 to 21 May 1984 with National Liberal party and then from 12 January 1990 to 7 December 1994 with the National Democratic Agreement party. He is still alive today and was succeeded by Marc Forné Molné.

Political career

Reig announced when he was elected that he would concentrate on fiscal and tax reforms. There is also evidence to suggest that he improved tourism in the country. In 1992 Ribas resigned after his efforts to introduce a new constitution securing civil human rights were blocked by the conservatives[3] His party returned to power following the general election held on 12 December 1993[4] in which it won the majority of seats. He formed a new coalition government shortly after. In 1994, Andorra became a member of the United Nations. This occurred while Reig was prime minister. Reig's party Agrupament Nacional Democratic (AND; National Democratic Group) lost the support of independents.[2] In December 1994, he was removed in a no-confidence vote by Parliament.
