Zouaoua

The Zouaoua, or Zwāwa, were a tribe of Zenata Berbers inhabiting homes in the mountains of the Djurdjura range. They were part of the Kabyle-speaking populations.[1][2]

From 1831, during the period of French rule in Algeria, they were recruited by the French Army to form the Zouaves. They had a great reputation for bravery, and formed the elite of the French Army.[1][2]
