Zolotinka (Russian: Золоти́нка) is an urban-type settlement in Neryungrinsky District in the far south of the Sakha Republic, Russia. Population: 552 (2010 Census);[1] 566 (2002 Census);[3] 1,065 (1989 Census).[4]
Geography
The settlement lies in the southern reaches of the Aldan Highlands, approximately 50 km of Neryungri.
It is situated on the Kholodnikan River, close to where it flows into the Iyengra River, a tributary of the Timpton. The village of Iyengra is located a few kilometers to the north.
History
Zolotinka was founded in the mid-1970s in conjunction with the construction of the railway linking the Baikal Amur Mainline to the city of Neyungri. It received urban-type settlement status in 1977. The town's name, meaning gold flake in Russian (from the word zoloto for gold) refers the gold reserves found in the area.
With completion of the railway, and gold mining activities not as successful as had been hoped, the majority of inhabitants left the town during the 1980s, with the population dropping from 5,377 in 1979 down to only 1,065 in 1989.
Infrastructure
The town has a railway station on the Amur Yakutsk Mainline.
