Zoie Palmer (born October 28, 1977) is a British Canadian actress, popular[1][2] for her role as Dr. Lauren Lewis[3][4] in the Showcase Canadian television supernatural crime drama Lost Girl.[5]
Personal life
Born in Camborne, Cornwall, England, of British and Irish parents, Zoie Palmer moved with her family to Canada when she was ten years old. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Newmarket, Ontario; and received a B.F.A. from York University[6] in Toronto, Canada, in 2001. Her sister, Tracey (Palmer) Weiler,[7] was the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario candidate for the Kitchener-Waterloo electoral district in the 2012 by-election for the Legislative Assembly of Ontario (Ontario Provincial Parliament).[8] Palmer's first experience as an actor was as a teenager in summer stock at The Red Barn Theatre in Sutton West, Ontario, Canada.[9]
Career
Palmer's television work includes made-for-TV movies The Reagans (2003) as Patti Reagan; Out of the Ashes (2003) as Didi Goldstein; Devil's Perch (2005) as Abby. Palmer had a recurring role as rock singer Patsy Sewer in the CTV Canadian teen drama/comedy series Instant Star; she was co-lead in the Global Canadian drama The Guard as Coast Guard rescue specialist Carly Greig (for which she had to conquer her fear of water[10]). Guest appearances include The CW American espionage drama Nikita in the episode "Girl's Best Friend" (2011) as Anya Vimer, a terrorist who tries to sabotage a peace summit; the HBO Canada comedy Call Me Fitz in the episode "Don of the Differently Abled" (2011) as Laura, an unhinged amputee with plans for an escort service for disabled people; the (CTV) Canadian science-fiction crime drama The Listener in the third season finale episode "The Shooting" (2012) as Staff Sgt. McCoy, an investigator for Internal Affairs.
Film roles include Annabelle in Terminal Venus (2003), for which she was awarded "Best Actor" at the Baja California Film Festival (Mexico); Haley in the romantic comedy The Untitled Work of Paul Shepard (2010), for which she received a 2011 ACTRA Award nomination for "Outstanding Female Performance";[11] Officer Frances Jane in the crime thriller Cold Blooded (2012), for which she was awarded the "Gold Medallion Acting Award for Best Actress in a Feature Film" by the 2012 Bare Bones International Film Festival;[12] Lou in the comedy Sex After Kids (2013).[13] Palmer will next be seen in the role of Bethany Franks in the fantasy adventure Patch Town (2013).
In May 2013, Palmer was chosen "Girl on Top 2013" by E! Entertainment Television in its E! Online popularity contest of Favorite TV Leading Ladies.[14] In the annual AfterEllen Visibility Awards for popularity, she was chosen "Favorite TV Actress" and "Best Tweeter" for year 2013.[15] She was chosen "Best Sci-Fi or Fantasy Actress" for 2013 by Canadagraphs in its annual Best Of TV Awards.[16]
