Zilairsky District (Russian: Зилаи́рский райо́н; Bashkir: Йылайыр районы) is an administrative[1] and municipal[4] district (raion), one of the fifty-four in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. It is located in the south of the republic and borders with Burzyansky District in the north, Baymaksky District in the east, Khaybullinsky District in the southeast and south, Zianchurinsky District in the southwest and west, and with Kugarchinsky District in the west and northwest. The area of the district is 5,773.99 square kilometers (2,229.35 sq mi).[5] Its administrative center is the rural locality (a selo) of Zilair.[2] Population: 16,590 (2010 Census).[2] The population of Zilair accounts for 33.7% of the district's total population.[2]
History
The district was established in 1930.[5]
Bashkir poet Babich Shaikhzada Muhametzakirovich was brutally murdered in 1919 on the territory of what now is Zilairsky District.
