Zherdevka (Russian: Жердевка) is a town and the administrative center of Zherdevsky District of Tambov Oblast, Russia, located on the Savala River (Khopyor's tributary) 128 kilometers (80 mi) south of Tambov. Population: 15,209 (2010 Census);[1] 16,557 (2002 Census);[3] 19,218 (1989 Census).[4]
It was founded in 1954 after the merging of a railroad station called Zherdevka (opened in 1869), a settlement near a sugar factory (built in 1937), and a settlement of Chibizovka.[citation needed] The name of the town derives from a nearby village of Zherdevka, located 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) away from it. It is also home to Zherdevka air base.
