Zaozyorsk (Russian: Заозёрск), formerly called Murmansk-150 (Му́рманск-150),[citation needed] is a closed town in Murmansk Oblast, Russia. Population: 11,199 (2010 Census);[3] 12,687 (2002 Census).[6]

History

Zaozyorsk was originally formed in 1958 to serve as a base for a nuclear underwater fleet that was to protect Soviet northern sea border.[citation needed] The base was renamed Zapadnaya Litsa in 1959.

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, it is incorporated as the closed administrative-territorial formation of Zaozyorsk—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1] As a municipal division, the closed administrative-territorial formation of Zaozyorsk is incorporated as Zaozyorsk Urban Okrug.[2]
