Zaire is one of the 18 provinces of Angola. It occupies 40,130 square kilometres (15,490 sq mi) in the north west of the country and has a population of approximately 600,000.[1] It has a tropical climate. M'Banza Kongo, formerly São Salvador, is the capital of the province.
Geography
Zaire Province borders the Atlantic Ocean in the west, with a coastline of 250 kilometres (160 mi). The Congo River (formerly known as the Zaire River) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo make up the border to the north. Zaire Province borders the provinces of Uíge to the east and Bengo to the south.[1]

The capital of Zaire Province is M'Banza Kongo, which was known as São Salvador from 1570 to 1975. It lies close to the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is 481 kilometres (299 mi) north of Luanda. M'Banza Kongo was once the seat of the Manikongo, the ruler of the Kingdom of Kongo.

Airports
Zaire Province is served by three airports. Soyo Airport and Mbanza Congo Airport have paved runways and regular flights to Luanda. N'zeto Airport has a grass strip runway and is used for private flights.[2]
