He is a 6 ft 7 in, 210 lbs. forward originally from Yaoundé.[1][2] He is a three-year starter for the La Salle Explorers of the Atlantic 10 Conference.[3] During his 2008-09 junior year, Mekongo was the Explorers' leading rebounder, pulling down six boards per game, and third leading scorer, scoring 10.4 points per game.[4] He was named to the Atlantic Ten Conference's All-Academic Team in both the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.[5]

Mekongo participated in the 2009 FIBA Africa Championship as a member of the Cameroon national basketball team.[6] He pulled down a game-leading eight rebounds in the bronze medal game against Tunisia, but the team lost the game and finished short of qualifying for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.[7]

Mekongo was named to the 30-man preseason candidate list for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award prior to the 2009-10 season.[8]
