Yuri Alvear Orejuela (born March 29, 1986 in Jamundí, Valle del Cauca[1]) is a female judoka from Colombia.
Early life
Yuri was born in Jamundí what is suburb of third largest city in Colombia, Cali. Her father Arnuy is a builder and mother Miryam is a housewife.[citation needed] She has also a brother Harvy.
From youth she was very talented in all kind of sports she did like water polo, volleyball, handball, athletics.[citation needed] When she was 14 a judo trainer of Litecom school Ruperto Guaúña was looking for a girls in his judo team.[2] That's how Yuri became a judoka.
Yuri begun with judo late but she already had physical condition from previous sport so she just needed to learn technical aspects of judo.[citation needed]
She is very good friend with other top Colombian judoka Anny Cortez.[3]
Two weeks before 2010 Pan American Judo Championships after training she felt some pain in left knee. She went to doctor and he found that she has torn ACL.[4]
Judo career
Alvear won the bronze medal of the under 57 kg division of the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games.[5]
In 2008 she participated Olympic Games in Beijing where she placed 7th losing very close match with Leire Iglesias from Spain and lost change to fight for medal.[citation needed]
In 2009 she won World Championships in Rotterdam.[citation needed] In final she gained victory over Anett Mészáros from Hungary and became third South American judoka who won the title by Natasha Hernández in 1984[citation needed] and Daniela Krukower in 2003.[citation needed]
In 2012 she won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in London, beating Fei Chen of China. This was the first ever Olympic medal for Colombia in Judo.[6]
