Young Magic is an electronic music group formed in Brooklyn, New York [1]

Musical History

Young Magic originated as a solo project of Isaac Emmanuel and expanded during 2010 in New York City.[2][3] Melati Malay was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and Michael Italia and Isaac Emmanuel were born in Australia.[2] The group began touring in Europe and North America after a series of limited 7" releases during 2011, and released their debut full-length, Melt, on Carpark Records on February 14, 2012[4][5]

Melt

Young Magic's debut album Melt was recorded in a variety of international locations including Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, USA, Spain, Germany, Iceland, Australia and the UK whilst band members travelled and documented the experience.[6] The music combines field recordings from these locations and original recordings with rare soul and psychedelic samples.[7] The New York Times described Melt as "lush and immersive... summons and elusive mood of longing among the sonic wonderment." The BBC described the album "like a beat poet racked by drink addiction; music that waxes and wanes, and explodes; and a great spirit which, rather than confine itself to basements and bedsits, aims its sights on the heavens. An exquisite new breed to behold." [1]

In 2012, Montreal-based duo Purity Ring sampled the lead vocals from Young Magic's "You With Air" on their song "Grandloves" from the album Shrines (4AD).[8] In 2013, Young Magic opened for Purity Ring on their North American tour and also made festival appearances at Austin Psych Fest, Noise Pop Festival and The Brooklyn Museum.

The band's artwork is designed by London-based art director Leif Podhajsky.
