Yim Si-wan (Hangul: 임시완; Hanja: ;[1] born on December 1, 1988), better known by his stage name Siwan, is a member of the nine-member South Korean boyband ZE:A managed by Star Empire Entertainment. They debuted on January 7, 2010 with the single Mazeltov.[2] He legally changed his first name from Woong-jae to Si-wan before his debut.[3] He appeared in 2012 MBC Moon Embracing the Sun as young Heo Yeom.[4]

Biography

Siwan was born on December 1, 1988, in Busan, South Korea. He attended Busan Gudeok High School, Pusan National University(dropout), University of East Broadcasting Arts(expulsion) and currently at Woosong Information College.[5][6] He legally changed his first name from Woong-jae to Si-wan before his debut.[3] He plays the violin[7] and guitar.[8]

Career

ZE:A

While attending Chin Chin Song Festival in Busan, Star Empire recruited him as a trainee.[9] He entered a nine-membered group called "Children of Empire", where he trained for three years. In 2009, they started in Mnet "Children of Empire" and "Children of Empire Returns", where they tour the country doing guerilla performances.[10] Later the group faced controversy in December following the similarities of the group's name to Brown Eyed Girls's Jea. The group later changed the pronunciation of the name to avoid implications.[11] On January 7, 2010, the group debuted with their EP, Nativity under the name ZE:A.[12] ZE:A made a comeback on March 25, 2010 with the release of their second mini album, Leap for Detonation. Produced by Brave Brothers, the title song "All Day Long" is melodramatic and featured a major change in style.[13] Then on March 17, 2011, the group released their first full length album '"Lovability'", which included songs from their previous albums as well as a few new ones.[14]

Solo activities

In January 2012, Siwan joined the cast of MBC historial drama Moon Embracing the Sun, playing the young version of 'Heo Yoem', a high-ranking official scholar and Crown Prince's tutor.[15][16][17] Later, Siwan was cast in KBS2's drama Man from the Equator. He played as teenaged Lee Jang-il who is a cold young man that has a sad story behind his negative outlook on life. The drama aired on 21 March.[18]

On March 22, Siwan along with IU and fellow ZE:A member Hwang Kwanghee started in Samsung CF for their latest smartphone, the 'Wave 3'. It is a three-part drama titled '20, the start of the Wave', which introduced various apps and tools of the 'Wave 3'.[19] Later he joined actress Lee Min-jung to shoot a CF for cosmetics brand Skin Food.[20]

After Moon Embracing the Sun and Man from the Equator, Siwan was cast on 87th episode of MBC's sitcom Standby. Siwan's role is a high school student, who not only has perfect grades, but also handsome looks and talent.[21][22]

Siwan appeared as the main male in Kara member, Goo Ha-ra's Japanese solo music video, "Secret Love". They acted as couple.[23] On November 15, 2012, he starred in Zia's music video "Tears Fall" which featured B.A.P's Bang Yong Guk and B1A4's Baro.[24]
