Yalding House
Yalding House is a building at 152–156 Great Portland Street, London, United Kingdom owned by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) which was the former home of BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra and Newsbeat.
Radio 1 had previously been based at Egton House, which was demolished in 2003 to make way for the new BBC Broadcasting House extensions. Radio 1 moved from Yalding House to new studios on the 8th floor of the new BBC Broadcasting House, just a few metres away from the "Peel Wing", which stands in place of its former home on 10 December 2012. "Egton Wing" occupies the land on which Egton House previously stood, and was renamed the "Peel Wing" in 2012 in honour of the long-serving BBC Radio 1 presenter, John Peel, who broadcast on the station from its launch in 1967 up until his death in 2004.
Radio 3 previously occupied Yalding House, with the BBC Central Music Library located on the ground floor and basement. The building's former role as a car showroom made it ideal for the heavy shelving required to store the collection.
On 14 December 2012, Radio 1 broadcast its last ever show from Yalding House which was The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw.[1]
Studios
Yalding House contains 5 studios which were used to broadcast shows on Radio 1 and 1xtra.
- Studio Y1 - Was a small studio used mainly for production.
- Studio Y2 - Was the studio where The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw, The Official Chart with Reggie Yates, Scott Mills and Greg James came from.
- Studio Y3 - Was the studio where Fearne Cotton, Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens came from.
- Studios Y4&Y5 - Were both used by 1xtra generally, although were occasionally used by Radio 1 if needed.
