History

Yahoo!7 was founded in January 2006 to develop a cross-media entity which would expand the content distribution networks of both internet-centric Yahoo and broadcast corporation Seven Media Group (now Seven West Media), then the Yahoo branding introduced the big red "7" logo into its brand. Yahoo!7 replaced Yahoo! Australia and New Zealand which had been in operation since 1997, taking on the majority of SWM’s online operations in the process. Ryan Stokes, current chairman of Seven’s Pacific Magazines division, said in a media release that the Yahoo!7 entity would provide a “leading platform to engage the online audiences with the best global products and locally relevant media content for their connected lives”.[1]

In December 2006, Yahoo!7 expanded its presence in New Zealand by partnering with Telecom New Zealand to establish Yahoo!Xtra. The venture was rebranded as Yahoo New Zealand in April 2011 after Telecom sold its 49% share back to Yahoo!7.

In recent years, Yahoo!7 has made a series of high-profile online acquisitions to supplement its core search and marketing businesses. The company purchased Australian sports tipping site OzTips in mid-2010[2] and bought over Australian group buying site Spreets for $40m in early 2011.[3] Spreets saw its membership increase by 140 per cent to 1.18m since the acquisition.[4]

Products and services

Print, Online and Broadcast content

Yahoo!7 derives its content from a number of sources including Seven West Media’s flagship media properties Seven Network and Pacific Magazines, and a variety of news and online media sites, as well as third-party content from Sony. The company runs a number of online portals which collate and augment content from these media outlets, including TV content supplementing Seven’s programming and a Lifestyle portal that draws on content from Yahoo!7, Pacific Magazines and Seven among others. Yahoo!7 also publishes an increasing volume of online-only content to supplement Seven West Media’s print and broadcast channels, particularly lifestyle journalism and rich media published through the Yahoo!7 Lifestyle portal.

In January 2010, Yahoo!7 launched PLUS7, an online catch-up portal for viewers to stream select TV shows with locked commercials and Seven News Updates for a limited period of time after airing. The service has been compared to the ABC’s iView which performs a similar function.[5] PLUS 7 extended to Samsung and iOS in 2013.

Fango mobile app

In November 2011, Yahoo!7 launched Fango, a free iOS and Android application which allows TV viewers to discuss and interact with TV programs being shown on Seven (particularly shows with a large community following, such as Home and Away and Border Security) and other TV shows.[6] Fango operates according to a “check-in” system whereby an app user can flag that they are currently watching a particular TV program. Once they check in, users can access extended features such as programmed polls, quizzes and competitions, as well as program-related discussions with their friends, other Fango users, or through major social media channels including Facebook and Twitter. In some cases, user suggestions and input via Fango can feed into live programming, including talk shows and coverage of events such as the Australian Open.[7] The app also sources program-related content based on Twitter hashtags as well as from official Facebook pages for each show.

The Fango app also incorporates rudimentary gamification techniques within its design, allowing viewers to earn points and badges based on their engagement with particular shows.

At present, Fango allows users to check into programs across all free-to-air TV networks, not just programs on Yahoo!7’s parent TV network Seven. Viewers also have the option to check in at major sporting events.

Web

Yahoo!7 also hosts a localised version of its Yahoo! communication and search as well as other vertical search services such as Yahoo!7 Answers.
