Wongalara Sanctuary

Wongalara Sanctuary is a 1,910 km² (472,000 acre) nature reserve in the Top End of the Northern Territory of Australia. It is a pastoral lease on the southern border of Arnhem Land, and is 120 km south-east of Kakadu National Park. It is owned and managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC), which acquired it in 2007 following a public fundraising campaign and assistance from the Australian Government in the form of a grant of $2.1 million from its National Reserve System Program.^[1]

Landscape

The landscape of Wongalara includes spinifex-covered ranges, sandstone plateaus and escarpments, eucalypt forests and woodlands, patches of monsoon rainforest and wetlands. The Wilton River flows through the reserve.^[1]

Threatened or significant animal species recorded from Wongalara include the Gouldian Finch, Crested Shrike-tit, Hooded Parrot, Red Goshawk, Northern Quoll, Kakadu Dunnart and Freshwater Crocodile.^[1]
