"Wolf" (Korean: 늑대와 미녀; simplified Chinese: 狼与美女; traditional Chinese: 狼與美女) is a song recorded by South Korean-Chinese boy band Exo. Available in both Korean and Mandarin, the song was digitally released on June 3, 2013 under the label of S.M. Entertainment. "Wolf" was also chosen to be promoted as the lead single from the Korean and Mandarin versions of group's first studio album XOXO.

Production

"Wolf" was composed by Will Simms, Nermin Harambasic from Dsign Music and S.M. Entertainment resident songwriter Kenzie. Kenzie also provided the lyrics for the Korean version of the song while Zhou Weijie penned the lyrics for the Mandarin Chinese version. A demo version of the song was leaked in February 2013, in response to which producer Ryan Jhun later gave a 'warning' to the illegal downloaders on May 29, 2013. "...I will report it to FBI and service department for all links..." Jhun expressed in frustration.[1] A representative from S.M. Entertainment also commented regarding the promotions that "...Exo-K and Exo-M will be joining to become Exo to promote as they go back and forth between Korea and China...".[2] Despite the leak, an estimated of 300,000 copies of the physical format of the group's first studio album XOXO were revealed to be pre-ordered, as revealed by the agency on May 30, 2013.[3] Moreover, Yoo Young-jin also participates in this song as a background vocalist. The dance routine for "Wolf" was choreographed by Tony Testa.[4]

Concept

EXO-K's leader Suho mentioned on Boom's radio show Youngstreet that the lyrics of are about a man who is accustomed with his playboy ways and interprets himself as the wolf who goes around tempting girls but is awestruck when he truly falls for a girl (known as the beauty).[citation needed] The dance, which was heavily bonded with the "wolf" concept, was choreographed by world-renowened Tony Testa. In several shows such as Arirang's After School Club, the members explain that the dance had 3 elements; the tree and forest, the caves and the wolf itself. EXO-M leader Kris revealed that it took them approximately 3 to 4 months to get the choreography down due to its level of difficulty.

Release

On May 23, 2013, a music video teaser for "Wolf" was uploaded on the official YouTube channel of the group.[5] This was followed by the release of longer teasers, Korean and Chinese versions, which also hinted at the choreography and the drama version of the music video.[6] Two days later, Korean and Chinese versions of the music videos were also uploaded.[7] Both language versions of "Wolf" were released digitally on June 3, 2013. The physical formats of the entire album XOXO also dropped on the same day in South Korea.[8] On July 15, 2013, both Korean and Chinese drama versions of the music video were released on SM Entertainment's official YouTube channel. The Chinese version was then re-uploaded the next day due to SM Ent. forgetting to add the Genie app advertisement.

Promotion

It was announced on May 22, 2013, that "Wolf" would be the title track and lead single from their first album and the first performance of Korean version will be on the episode of M.net M! Countdown on May 30, four days ahead of actual album release.[9] This was then followed by performances on KBS Music Bank on May 31 and MBC Show! Music Core on June 1. After their third performance on SBS Inkigayo on June 03, 2013, Exo decided to visit and thank 2,000 fans who had been waiting at a nearby park to meet them.[10] The first performance of the Mandarin version of the song is scheduled to be aired on a popular Chinese variety show Happy Camp in mid-June.[11]
