Wings of deliverance

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wings of Deliverance was a religious group founded by James Warren Jones on April 4, 1955. Jones founded the Wings of Deliverance shortly after he left the Laurel Street Tabernacle, located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jones' charismatic preaching style had helped the struggling church gain new members, however, his inclusion of African Americans made long-time members uncomfortable. Jones was asked to cease welcoming minorities to the church or leave. He chose to leave the church and start his own.

The Wings of Deliverance was a Christian organization that was supportive of Jones' commitment to social justice for people of all races. Many of the members were formerly of the Laurel Street Tabernacle. In 1956, a year after its founding, the Wings of Deliverance was renamed The Peoples Temple.
