Windward Reports is a suite of enterprise-level reporting software, document generation software, and business intelligence software for business teams. Windward Reports is used for stand-alone reporting, custom reporting applications, and as the basis for OEM, VAR and other integrated data presentation needs.

Users

Customers include GE Industrial Equipment Services, Fidelity Investments and Pfizer Inc.[1]

History

Windward, formerly Windward Reports, was created by Windward Studios, which was founded in 1994. Windward Studios was initially a game development studio that produced the real-time strategy game Enemy Nations. In 2002, Windward began focusing on developing data software solutions, primarily for reporting and document generation. Windward is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado.

Functionality

Windward uses Microsoft Office as its report template design tool. The core products it provides are:

  • AutoTag - an addin for Microsoft Office used to design report templates.
  • Windward Engine - an enterprise reporting & document generation engine available in both a Java (software platform) and .NET Framework version.
  • AutoQuery - a business intelligence template design tool with ad hoc and drill-down features
  • Javelin - a web-based reporting system that is programming language independent
  • Arrow (Open Source) - Windward's implementation of the .NET engine as a SharePoint web part. Allows scheduling and report creation with option to email results.[4]
  • The Kailua Project (Open Source) - a set of extensions for the ADO.NET and TimeZone classes.[5]

Data sources

Natively supports data from the following sources.

  • Any SQL database (using JDBC on Java and ADO.NET, ODBC, & OleDb on .NET)
  • XML from an XML file, url, REST, etc.
  • SharePoint Lists.
  • OData (Open Data Protocol)

Programming Languages

Windward supports the following programming languages:

  • Java (the Windward Java Engine)
  • The .NET family of languages including C#, C++, and Visual Basic (the Windward.NET Engine)
  • Ruby, Python, PHP and virtually any other programming language (the Windward Javelin web-based reporting system)

Output formats

  • Microsoft Office - DOCX XLSX, XLS, and PPTX
  • File formats - PDF, HTML, RTF, and TXT.
  • Direct to a printer.

Media coverage

Cubicle Wars, an early marketing video by the company, received an overwhelming response when it debuted in 2006.[6] With over 2 million views on YouTube and Digg.com the video become a small internet phenomenon, BusinessWeek’s August 2007 SmallBiz publication acknowledged the response with an article.[6]
