Whampoa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whampoa originally refers to an area that is now known as the Huangpu District, Guangzhou in China, and since then it has also been used to refer to other places outside China. Since the Chinese Communists assumed power in the mid-20th century, in China the spelling has been largely replaced by "Huangpu" except for a few historical establishments:
- Whampoa anchorage, the intermediate way station between Macau and Guangzhou
- Whampoa Military Academy, a military academy of the Republic of China in Guangzhou
- Whampoa Pagoda, an ancient structure in Guangzhou
- Treaty of Whampoa, a commercial treaty between France and China concluded in 1844
As of the 21st century, however, it is still in use to refer to other places, both historical or modern:
- In Hong Kong:
- Whampoa Dock, a Hong Kong dockyard operated in the Crown Colony of Hong Kong from 1863 - 1979.
- Whampoa Garden, a private housing estate built in the 1980s located on part of the former site of the dock
- Whampoa Station, a proposed terminal station on the Kwun Tong Line of the MTR in Hong Kong, expected to be completed in 2015.
- Hutchison Whampoa, a Hong Kong conglomerate, the eventual owner of the Whampoa Dock, Whampoa Garden, A.S. Watson & Co., Superdrug and Hutchison 3G.
- In Singapore:
- Whampoa, Singapore - a district of the city
- Whampoa Single Member Constituency, Singapore, a constituency represented by Heng Chee How that contains the Whampoa, Singapore district plus some other areas
