Westnewton, Cumbria

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Westnewton is a small village and civil parish in the Allerdale District, in the county of Cumbria, England. It is located on the B5301 road, between Aspatria and Silloth. Westnewton has a school called St Matthew's Church of England School, a pub called the Swan Inn, a church called St Matthew's Church and a crematorium.

In June 2012, it became clear that Westnewton (specifically the Solway Plain between Silloth, Abbeytown and Westnewton) has been identified as a potential site for a Geological Disposal Facility for the UK's high level nuclear waste. Two other sites have also been identified - Eskdale and the Ennerdale - both of these are within the Lake District National Park. The Solway Plain wasn't named by the Managing Radioactive Waste Safely (MRWS) Partnership, rather they referred to the 'Low permeability sedimentary rocks associated with the Mercia Mudstone Group(MMG)'. This was in (publicly available) document 285 of the West Cumbria MRWS in a report written by Dr Dearlove, the consultant geologist recruited by MRWS.

Etymology

'Nīwe' is Old English for 'new'; 'tūn' is OE for 'homestead', 'village'. So, 'West new village' - " so called, it is probable, in contra-distinction to Newton Arlosh, in the parish of Holm Cultram, which lies to the east." [1]
