Westmount Centre is a shopping centre located in west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It contains 75 stores and services including Safeway, Shoppers Drug Mart, Walmart (formerly Zellers), The Home Depot and the four-screen Empire Theatres cinema complex (now abandoned). There is also a large food court in the mall.

History

Westmount Centre was started as a strip mall called Westmount Shopper's Park in 1955.

When Westmount Shoppers' Park opened in August 1955, it was Edmonton's first shopping mall and it created quite a stir in the growing city. With Woodward's, Johnstone Walker and Kmart as anchor tenants, more than 40 other merchants and 3,000 free parking stalls, it was unlike anything Edmonton had ever seen.[1]

Entertainment Facilities

The movie theatre in the mall, last operated by the Empire chain, first opened in 1985. This theatre replaced another cinema located in another part of the mall which originally opened in 1959 as the single-screen Sahara Theatre. The Sahara Theatre became the Westmount Theatre in 1965 when Famous Players took it over. Famous Players twinned the theatre in 1971 by building a smaller, 500-seat auditorium adjoining the existing 800-seat one. The current theatre had four screens until it shut down in the spring of 2011.[2]
