The Western Australia cricket team, nicknamed the Warriors, are an Australian cricket team representing the state of Western Australia. The team is governed by the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA), and plays most of its home games at the WACA Ground in Perth, having also hosted games at Fremantle Oval in Fremantle and Hands Oval in Bunbury. The team mainly plays matches against other Australian states in the first-class Sheffield Shield competition and the List A Ryobi One-Day Cup, but also plays matches against touring international sides. Western Australia is currently defunct as a Twenty20 team, being replaced by the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League for the 2011–12 season.
The current coach of Western Australia is Justin Langer. The captaincy is currently vacant, with Marcus North having resigned in October 2012. Adam Voges is the current acting captain for the remainder of the 2012–13 season. Notable players for Western Australia who also played for the Australian cricket team include Rod Marsh and Dennis Lillee, who are inductees of the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, and Bob Simpson, Kim Hughes, Geoff Marsh, Adam Gilchrist and Mike Hussey, who each captained Australia whilst playing for Western Australia.
History
Since joining the Sheffield Shield in 1947/48, Western Australia has won the competition 15 times, second only to New South Wales in that period. In the one-day Ford Ranger Cup competition, the team leads the winners table comfortably with 11 wins followed by New South Wales with 8 wins.
In 1994, WACA Chief Executive Officer Chris Smith commissioned a survey of school-children into the comparative popularity and recognition of state cricketers compared with AFL stars of the West Coast Eagles and basketballers from the Perth Wildcats. 90% recognised AFL names, 75% recognised basketballers, but only 30% recognised state cricketer's names. Smith embarked on a concerted campaign to improve the penetration of cricket into the school system as well as marketing the team more widely. As part of the marketing strategy, the 'Western Warriors' brand was launched officially for the start of the 1996–97 season, following the similar launch of the 'Queensland Bulls' a couple of years earlier.[2]
Western Australia won the short-lived Champions Cup in 2001.
