Campus and Local Learning Centres
The main campus and facilities of West Suffolk College are situated on Out Risbygate in Bury St Edmunds. However, the Building and Construction services courses are currently located at a separate campus found on Anglian Lane, Bury St Edmunds.
In addition to the two sites in Bury St Edmunds, the college engages with the wider community through a number of Local Learning Centres. These are located in: Haverhill, Ipswich, Mildenhall, Stowmarket and Sudbury.
History
The college was originally founded in 1951 as The Bury St Edmunds Technical Institute and was based at the Silver Jubilee School. The courses provided at this time were largely Engineering, Construction, Building and vocational evening classes.[3]
In 1958, the decision to build a new, purpose built college was taken. As a result the Gibraltar Barracks site was selected to be the new home of the college. It was finally opened as West Suffolk College on the 29th May 1961 by John Rous the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk.[3]
Facilities
West Suffolk College has a wide range of facilities and, in recent years, has undertaken major developments on the Bury St Edmunds Campus. Leonardo House, a building dedicated to arts and science, was officially opened in 2008.[4] The building houses a full suite of art studios with provision for traditional methods such as print, 3D, ceramics, digital and traditional photography. The newly refurbished Edmund house was open for students in 2010.[4] Facilities within Edmund House include the purpose-built performance space The Inspire Theatre, a creative media production suite and an industry standard music technology suite with dedicated tracking and mixing studios.[5]
In May 2012, West Suffolk College opened a new Construction and Building Services facility, The Milburn Centre. As well as providing facilities for traditional construction and building services subjects, The Milburn Centre also houses the 'Milburn Energy Centre' which concentrates on sustainable technologies.[6]
In September 2013, West Suffolk College's new Gateway building was open to students. The Gateway is a £7.5 million structure[7] and is the new face of West Suffolk College on the main Bury St Edmunds campus. The building houses the College's Main Reception, the Principal's office, Student Welfare services, recreational space and new dining facilities as well as more than 20 classrooms for 16 to 19 year-olds on Further Education courses.[8]
