West Manchester Mall is a single-level, enclosed regional shopping mall in West Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania, west of the city of York. Opened in 1981, the mall includes Kohl's, Macy's, Regal Entertainment Group-operated movie theater, and Walmart.

History

Crown American opened West Manchester Mall in 1981. At the time, it featured Hess's, The Bon-Ton and Gee Bee Department Stores as its anchor stores.[1] Gee Bee later became Value City in 1992. Hecht's (now Macy's) was added in 1995.[2]

Since the opening of the York Galleria mall on the opposite end of town, the mall has been in a fast decline. Hess's closed in 1993, with Walmart replacing it the same year.[3] The store expanded to a supercenter in 2003, displacing part of the mall itself.[4] Value City closed in 2008, only to later become occupied by Kohl's in 2010.[5] The mall suffered minor damage in April 2011 when a tornado touched down in the area. The high winds combined with heavy rain shattered a skylight in the center of the mall, causing substantial amounts of water rain inside. Power outages throughout the mall and damage in the parking lots from debris also occurred.[6] Later that year, The Bon-Ton closed its doors, leaving only 4 anchors to the mall.[7]

Redevelopment

In September 2012, the Texas-based M&R Investors purchased the West Manchester Mall for approximately $17.5 million. The group plans to redevelop the mall into a hybrid of the existing anchor stores and a new outdoor shopping center, similar to the Hunt Valley Towne Centre in Hunt Valley, Maryland. Expected to be completed in 2014, the project intends to attract national retailers and restaurants to occupy the mostly-vacant shopping center.[8] Additional improvements are also being made to the site, including increased visibility from Route 30, an additional entrance off of Carlisle Road, and more. As part of the redevelopment project, the developers plan to change the name of the mall to "West Manchester Town Center."
