The West End Summit was a pipe dream that did not come to fruition. After five years of serving as a monumentally huge swimming hole for ducks, an announcement was made that the massive hole was going to be turned into a mixed use development that has been approved for construction in Nashville, Tennessee.

Criticism

The project has been criticized by the public because of its numerous construction delays and billing agreements. Harmon Inc. filed a lawsuit saying it is owed US$120,000 by Alex S. Palmer, the project's developer, and general contractor Bovis Lend Lease. Construction has been suspended for about a year as the developer deals with the credit crunch and is awaiting an anchor tenant for the office portion of the project.[2]

Some citizens of Nashville have begun to call the resulting construction hole "Lake Palmer."[3] This 80-foot-deep (24 m) hole is now mostly filled with rainwater.

Anchor tenants signed

On September 27, 2012 Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, joined by Gov. Bill Haslam and HCA Chairman and CEO Richard Bracken, announced the location of two corporate headquarters in Midtown at the West End Summit property.[citation needed]

The proposed development would consist of two towers of approximately 20 stories each, with one tower anchored by the corporate headquarters of Parallon Business Solutions and the other anchored by Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI).

While financing has been appropriated for the construction, HCA has now decided to move their headquarters downtown across from the new convention center on Demonbreun St as of November 2013.

Intercontinental Hotel addition

Alex. S. Palmer & Company and Concord Hospitality have signed a letter of intent for the development of an Intercontinental Hotel in Nashville, Tenn., as part of Palmer’s West End Summit.[4]

According to Palmer, the full-service hotel will have 200-plus luxury rooms and suites and a conference center with a premium ballroom. It will also have a marquee restaurant and entertainment areas, including 24-hour workout room and guest services. It is currently in the design phase with plans to open in 2015.

The West End development will also include a 2,800-car parking garage, high-end retail, signature restaurants and a state-of-the-art fitness center.

With the addition of the hotel at 1600 West End Ave., the West End Summit project is expected to exceed $300 million.
