West Australian Opera

West Australian Opera is the principal opera company of Western Australia and is based at His Majesty's Theatre in Perth.[1]

The company formed in 1967 and works in close association with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. In July 2012 Joseph Colaneri was appointed Artistic Director[2] and succeeded Richard Mills, who had previously held the post since 1997. The current Chairman is Warwick Hemsley.

Mills composed The Love of the Nightingale to help celebrate the company's 40th anniversary, and premiered it in February 2007.[1]

History

The company was founded in 1967 by James Penberthy and Giuseppe Bertinazzo.[3]

In 1997 Richard Mills was Appointed Artistic director of the company. In 2007 - to celebrate the 40th anniversay of the company the WA Opera staged the world premier of Mill's Opera The Love of the Nightingale.

In 2012 it was announced that Joseph Colaneri would be taking over as artistic director.
