Weald Warriors RLFC are a rugby league team playing in the London and South East Regional League of the Rugby League Conference London & South Division. The club is based in Royal Tunbridge Wells,[1] Kent with players recruited from West Kent and East Sussex.

The club runs two seniors (open age) sides, both of whom play in black and canary yellow, with cherry red trim. The club kit supplier is Azzurri Sports under a deal that sees all Weald Warriors personnel exclusively using Azzurri branded goods and equipment.

The main club sponsor is the Dark Star Brewery with the first team being sponsored by TAM Groundworks.[2]

The season runs from late April to early August. For the 2013 season, the first team play in the RFL London and South East Regional League. The second team play in the RFL London and South East Entry League.

Club History

Weald Warriors were founded in 2012 by former Barrow RLFC and London Skolars player Anthony Bennett, Tom Phillips and Alex Nicholson.[3] Their initial goal was the introduction of rugby league into the West Kent and East Sussex area.

The club's inaugural season in the London and South East Merit League saw them finish 4th in the table. The first competitive game for the club came against Dagenham Bulldogs [4] on May 26, 2012. The club was also able to field a second team, Weald Warriors A during the season, highlighting the continued development and growth of the club since its inception.

In 2013 the club will field four sides: two open age sides and an Academy side (under 16s to under 18s). The first team will play in the London and South East Regional League, with the A-team playing in the London and South East Merit League.

In April 2013 the club secured its financial future and a permanent home ground, signing an agreement with the Tunbridge Wells Borderers organisation to use St Marks Recreation ground and clubhouse facilities, as a partner club. Commercial Director Bob Phillips also secured a new major sponsor for the 1st XIII.

The club has the unique distinction of hosting Royal Tunbridge Wells' first ever competitive game of Rugby League.[5]

Awards

In recognition of the club's success and development of the game in the Weald area, the club was nominated for Sports Team of the Year in the Courier Media Group Regional Awards 2012. Weald Warriors were awarded 3rd place overall at the awards night held at Lingfield Park, October 25, 2012.

Personnel

The squad is composed of players from a variety of sporting backgrounds, predominantly drawn from a variety of rugby union clubs in the West Kent and East Sussex region, such as Tunbridge Wells RFC, Crowborough RFC, Heathfield and Waldron RFC, Cranbrook RFC, Uckfield RFC and Tonbridge Juddians RFC.

The club also includes several former professional rugby league players (as playing members and backroom staff) and current student rugby league players.

The 2013 coaches are Richard Spence and Alex Nicholson. The Director of Rugby for the Academy in 2013 will be Graham Withers.[6]
