Waves is the annual culfest of the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani – Goa Campus. It is a three-day long festival held in the late October - early November period each year. The festival receives external participation of close to 2,000 each edition.[1][2][3][4]

History

Waves was first held in 2006, when it was an intra-college affair. Since then, Waves moved on to being a regional festival, with many colleges from the Goa-Mumbai region participating. Waves went national in 2008 and was extremely successful. Emboldened by this success, 2009 saw two editions of the festival. KK, Vidya Balan, Parikrama, DJ Suketu- Waves Winter 2009 featured one of the biggest artist line-up seen in its history. Indian Ocean and DJ Ivan churned out spectacular performances in Waves Summer 2009. Aptly themed ‘Viva La Vida- A celebration of life’, Waves 2010 represented an exhilarating celebration of life with Shafqat Amanat Ali, Blackstratblues, Thermal and a Quarter took the crowds to a whole new level of musical nirvana. Music reverberated off the walls of BITS Pilani Goa campus with the music of Raeth, Agam, TAAQ and Something Relevant. Kailash Kher mesmerised the crowd with the magic of Sufi music. Waves 2011 saw its biggest event, Sea Rock, having its elimination rounds in Delhi, Bangalore and Pune.

The subsequent years saw Waves the festival grow in terms of participation and number of events. Waves 2012 was titled "Relieve the streets". The year saw an international act, Dead Letter Circus, a band from Australia perform for the English Nite as well as judge the Searock event which had become one of India's biggest semi professional rock band hunt contests. The year also saw Pakistani band, Strings performing for the Hindi nite. The third nite saw a Sunburn campus happen for the first time.

The theme for Waves 2013 is "Hit the Rewind". Vishal-Shekar will be performing for the Hindi nite and English metal band Monuments perform for the English nite. An art fair and a flea market will also be happening for the first time. New events like Moot Courts will be happening for the first time in Waves 2013.

Goa

Goa was once described as South Asia's Latin Quarter: indulgent, tolerant, capricious, steeped in a tropical lassitude and wedded to the sea. And this description is well lived up to every year in November when BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus celebrates their annual cultural festival. One of the fastest growing college fests of our country, and also the most popular, WAVES has become a cultural and social phenomenon among the youth and has come a long way since its humble inception in 2006. Last year, we ‘relived the streets’ and the theme for this year is HIT THE REWIND. We have managed to create quite a buzz across the nation already.

WAVES has been named so for quite obvious reasons. Nestled in the hottest and quite scenic destination of India, with the sea as her snug neighbour, you cannot not want to be here during this time of the year. Fabulous beaches, sizzling sands, vibrant colours, delicious food and a marvellous crowd may be synonymous with Goa but we have a lot more to offer.

Collaborating with foreign embassies, we host a crowd as enormous as 10,000 students from hundreds of colleges of India, some of the best entertainment in the form of dazzling nights, contemporary artists, bands and performers, international and domestic, along with a vast range of fascinating and diverse events in the fields of dance, drama, music, literature and arts showcasing some of the best talent of the nation. Last year we hosted the official pre-Sunburn and the Australian Rock band, Dead Letter Circus and Pakistani band, Strings were the headlining acts. The platform we provided to them is enviable and the time they spent here, unforgettable. Searock, Natyanjali, FashP and Mr. and Ms. Waves make up the BIG 4 with a myriad of other events. The participation for FashP and Mr. and Ms. Waves is huge as we have grown nationally over the years. There is something in store for everyone and we make sure that these three days will be remembered for nothing less than absolute entertainment.

As is evident from the international nature of the festival, Waves has become a melting pot of various cultures and diversities, we fully appreciate its richness in heritage and variety. Goa is known for its hospitality and is undoubtedly, one of the most sought after tourist locations of the world and all we do is add to that repute. We stress on the fact that we have risen above the tag of ‘just another college fest’ as we celebrate diversity and international harmony by setting the stage for societies coming together. We are growing in every direction, and maturing. We have come this far and we hope to go beyond. The dream is bigger this time around; as we welcome you to the Goa within Goa.

Events

Waves features a variety of events spanning the various categories of Music, Dance, Literary, Quiz, Drama and the Fine Arts. ‘The Big 3’ events of Waves, Natyanjali , Fashion Parade and Mr. And Ms. Waves generally attract the biggest crowds. Sea Rock is a national event and held in several cities. Over the years the number of events have increased with several new introductions like Sizzle and Vices Quiz becoming very popular among the participants. Waves 2012 saw the overall winners trophy tied between Christ University, Bangalore and H.R. College, Mumbai.[5]
