The Warisan Merdeka (English: Heritage of Independence) is a 1,957 ft (596 m), 118-storey skyscraper proposed to be built in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with a budget of RM5 billion.[2] When completed in 2018, it will be the tallest building in Malaysia, succeeding the Petronas Twin Towers, which has 88 stories.[1]
It is planned to be constructed within the vicinity of Plaza Rakyat, Victoria Institution, Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara.[2] The project will be funded by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).[3]
Criticism
Many have criticized this project, saying that it is a wasteful project and the RM5 billion funds could have been used for other causes like poverty, education and roads.[3]
In response to the criticism, the Prime Minister said that the project is not a waste and will bring more benefits.[3]
First planned to be slightly taller than 509 m (1,670 ft), surpassing Taipei 101, the proposed height of Warisan Merdeka Tower has been revised to 1,957 ft (596 m). There is speculation that only the spire is extended without adding further number of floors to the originally-planned 100-storey structure.[citation needed]
