Wanted is an 2009 Bollywood crime action thriller film directed by Prabhu Deva. The film stars Salman Khan, Ayesha Takia, Prakash Raj, Vinod Khanna and Mahesh Manjrekar in the lead roles. It is a remake of a Telugu film Pokiri, starring Mahesh Babu and Illeana D'Cruz. The film released on 18 September 2009, and broke many records at the box office upon release, due to Khan's comeback. Wanted was also the 2nd highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year 2009.[3]

Plot

The story is about Radhe (Salman Khan), a hardcore gangster who would do anything for money. He is attracted towards Jhanvi (Ayesha Takia), a simple fitness trainer, who also has a soft spot for Radhe in her heart. The two are unable to express their love to each other, until one day, selfish Inspector Talpade (Mahesh Manjrekar) enters the love story and also falls for Jhanvi. He starts threatening Jhanvi and her family, as if Jhanvi did not marry him, he would rape Jhanvi's mother. When Radhe finds this out, he has a huge fight with Talpade, causing Talpade to realise he shouldn't mess with Radhe and he backs off. Soon enough, underworld don Gani Bhai (Prakash Raj) arrives in India for an assassination.

Gani Bhai hires Radhe as his assassin and Radhe agrees. As Datta Pawle and Gani Bhai's gang are fighting for the biggest piece of Mumbai, commissioner Ashraf Khan (Govind Namdeo) vows to make the city crime-free and starts his campaign by arresting 200 criminals. Ashraf Khan arrests and kidnaps Gani Bhai and holds him on a stranded boat where no one could find him. Gani Bhai tries hard to contact Radhe but fails in every attempt. Until, Ashraf Khan's daughter is kidnapped and he realises Gani Bhai's men are behind this. His men start filming his daughter and send him a CD of the same. Resigned, he lets Gani free. Under the influence of drugs, his daughter reveals to Gani Bhai the news that an IPS officer named Rajveer Shekhawat is after him and wants to murder him, so Gani attacks his father Shrikant Shekhawat (Vinod Khanna).

Shrikant doesn't give any information on his son, until he is held gunpoint by Gani Bhai's men. Assuming Ajay for Rajveer, Gani kills him. After realising his mistake Gani questions Shrikant. Shrikant does not tell him about the plans of Rajveer, and Gani Bhai murders Shrikant and leaves. His son, Rajveer Shekhawat arrives at the scene full of tears, and it is revealed that Radhe is actually IPS officer Rajveer Shekhawat, and he was undercover as a gangster to finish off Gani Bhai and his gang. Now, he vows to take revenge on his father's murderer.He Uses Talpade to track down him where Gani Says that he is located in Binnimills. Then Radhe(Rajveer Shekawat)raids the Binnimill and kills all of the goons including Gani's Right Hand Mona. Radhe kicks Gani causing Gani to temporarily lose his hearing. Gani then attacks Radhe, but Radhe gives him an excellent kickback such that the blood oozes from Gani's mouth, and when he is about to kill Radhe, his throat is slit by Radhe and he immediately dies. Soon enough, Inspector Talpade enters the scene and pretends he didn't see anything, but is also then shot by Radhe. The film ends with Radhe quoting his tag line, "एक बार जो मैंने कमिटमेंट कर दी, फिर मैं अपने आप की भी नहीँ सुनता" meaning "Once I have committed myself to something, I don't even listen to myself". Then the credits roll.

Production

Director Prabhu Deva was also the director of the previous Tamil remake, Pokkiri. Asin Thottumkal was first approached for the role of Jhanvi, but due to other commitments she rejected the offer.[4] Consequently the role went to Ayesha Takia. Shah Rukh Khan was the first option for the lead role but rejected the script by saying that "no one can fit for the role except Mahesh Babu". After that Salman Khan agreed to the role.

Bollywood Hungama [5]

The music of the film is given by Sajid Wajid. The music received mixed to negative reviews from critics, with a few songs seeing a positive response. Bollywood Hungama gave it an overall rating of 2.5/5. "Jalwa" and "Love Me Love Me" were declared the most successful tracks and topped the charts with its release.[6]

Reception

Critical reception

Nikhat Kazmi from The Times of India gave it 4 out of 5, so did Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama, who added "Wanted will run only on Salman's star power."[7] Raja Sen from Rediff gave a negative rating of 2/5 and said "Khan might be having fun, but the fact a film like Wanted underscores is how badly Bollywood needs a breed of younger leading men. And how the existing lot need roles that fit."[8]

Box office

Wanted had an excellent opening, grossing Rs. 440 million in the first week.[9] It shattered records in Pakistan, grossing over Rs. 7.5 million in its first weekend, which was a record for any Indian film.[10] Wanted nett. grossed Rs. 609.4 million in India and Rs. 100.6 million overseas. The film was a Box Office Hit.[11]

Sequel

Film producer Boney Kapoor announced his ideas to make Wanted 2 during 2011. Salman Khan had also requested director Prabhu Deva to create a script. In 2012, Kapoor reported that he has thought of casting Khan opposite Asin for the lead role, and that the project is under the title of Most Wanted. However, Prabhu Deva announced that he is unsure about the sequel, and if it is being made, it would happen in the near future.[16][17]
