Wang Yin is a fictional character in the Water Margin, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Wang Yin is the Secretary of Military Affairs serving under the rebel leader, Fang La, one of the antagonists and enemy of the 108 Liangshan outlaws. He is considered one of the most powerful warriors in the entire novel, and one of the Five Tiger Generals of Fang La, the others being Shi Bao, Deng Yuanjue, Fang Jie, and Si Xingfang.

Biography

Wang Yin is a native of Shezhou (present-day She County, Anhui) and used to be a stone craftsman. He is well versed in literary arts and military strategy and is appointed by Fang La as secretary of military affairs. In combat, Wang Yin wields a bronze spear and rides a stallion called "Huanzhuan Shanfei" (喚轉山飛), which moves across mountainous terrain and water as though it were treading on flat land.

As Wang Yin is a civil official, he does not have many opportunities to take to the battlefield. During the battle of Shezhou against Liangshan forces, Wang Yin sets pitfall traps near the city gates and lures Shan Tinggui and Wei Dingguo into the traps, where they are killed. After the city is overrun by Liangshan forces, Wang Yin attempts to break out of the encirclement and he slays Shi Yong, who blocks his path, while his horse tramples Li Yun to death. Following that, Wang Yin takes on Sun Li, Huang Xin, Zou Run and Zou Yuan at the same time, managing to hold them off until Lin Chong's arrival. Wang Yin is eventually slain by the combined efforts of the five Liangshan heroes.
