Wang Jianlin (Chinese: 王健林; pinyin: Wáng Jiànlín; born 1954) is a Chinese billionaire.[1] He is the Chairman of the Dalian Wanda Group, one of China's largest real estate developers, and also the world's largest operator of movie theaters after the purchase of AMC Entertainment Holdings for US$ 2.6 billion in 2013.[2][3]
In 2013 Forbes ranked him the 128th richest person in the world, with US$ 8.6 billion.[2] In August 2013, he is listed as the wealthiest person in China with a net worth of US$ 14.2 billion by Bloomberg.[4]
Biography
Wang Jianlin was born in October 24, 1954 in Cangxi County, Sichuan Province, China.
From 1970 to 1986, he served in the People's Liberation Army.[1][5] In 1986, he graduated from Liaoning University and started working as the Office Administrator for the Xigang District in the city of Dalian.[6] In 1989, he became the General Manager of Xigang Residential Development Company.[6] He was Head of Factory in a Jiangyin-based factory.[7] In 1992, he started working as the General Manager for the Dalian Wanda Group.[6] He has served as the CEO since 1993.[6] He has also been serving as Executive Deputy General Manager and Director in Jiangsu Jiangnan Water Co., a company in Jiangsu.[7]
In 1976, he joined the Communist Party of China.[5] He served as deputy to the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.[6][8] He now serves as the Vice-Chairman of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and has been a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference since 2008.[1][6][8] He is also a member of the China Entrepreneur Association, the China Enterprise Directors Association, the China General Chamber of Commerce and China Real Estate.[6]
His company owns 9.03 million square metres of investment property, 49 Wanda Plazas, 26 luxury hotels, 86 cinemas, 40 department stores, and 45 karaoke centres around China. The company became the world's largest theatre owner in 2012 when it acquired AMC Theaters.
In September 2013 he announced plans to build the world's largest studio pavilion at Oriental Movie Metropolis which include a 10,000 square meter studio and an underwater stage.[9]
Personal
Wang, a fan of folk music, has been known to sing Tibetan and Mongolian folk songs at Wanda corporate annual meetings.[5] He is the oldest of five brothers born in Sichuan province.[5] His father fought for Mao Zedong's Red Army during the Long March campaign.[5] He has two sons and one daughter.
