Walterswil is a municipality in the Oberaargau administrative district in the Swiss canton of Bern.

Geography

Walterswil has an area of 7.9 km2 (3.1 sq mi). Of this area, 75.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 21.2% is forested. The rest of the land, (3.8%) is settled.[3]

Demographics

Walterswil has a population (as of 31 December 2012) of 541.[1] As of 2007, 2.0% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -2.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (98.9%), with Albanian being second most common ( 0.9%) and French being third ( 0.2%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 63.2% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (9.5%), the CSP (8.3%) and the local small left-wing parties (8%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 26.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 56.4% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 17.4%. In Walterswil about 70.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Walterswil has an unemployment rate of 0.56%. As of 2005, there were 168 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 57 businesses involved in this sector. 21 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 5 businesses in this sector. 49 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 11 businesses in this sector.[3]
