Walking Too Fast (Czech: Pouta, literally handcuffs) is a Czech Thriller and drama film directed by Radim Špaček. It was released in 2010. It is a psychological story about relations between secret police (StB) and dissident movement, set in communist Czechoslovakia in the 1980s.. The film was likened to the German film The Lives of Others.

Plot

The story revolves around Antonín Rusnák who is an StB agent. He feels rage towards the world. He feels sick and bored from his family and work. He becomes interested in unreachable Klára. As he tries to get her he starts to break rules of the system he is supposed to protect. But his revolt isn't a civic or political gesture but clearly personal and furious.

Walking Too Fast is a dark thriller with unpredictable protagonist who becomes dangerous to all people around including himself. His way to reach the goal is selfdestructive.

Cast

  • Ondřej Malý - Antonín Rusnák - He is the main protagonist of the film and a State Security agent. He becomes interested in Klára.
  • Martin Finger - Tomáš Sýkora - A member of Dissident movement and the primary antagonist of the film. He ressists to the regime and to Antonín who tries to expel him to Austria.[1][2]
  • Kristína Farkašová - Klára Kadlecová - She is a lover of Tomáš. She is also interest of Antonín. She supports Tomáš and Pavel.
  • Luboš Veselý - Pavel Veselý - Important figure in dissident movement and a close friend to Tomáš. In real he collaborates with State Security.
  • Lukáš Latinák - Martin Husár - A partner of Antonín and anothe agent of State Security.
  • Barbora Milotová - Silvie Sýkorová - She is the wife of Tomáš who is unfaithful to her with Klára.
  • Ivana Uhlířová - Darina - A friend of Klára.
  • Oldřich Kaiser - Janeček - A State Security officer who is the boss of Antonín and Martin. He was a mentor to Antonín whom he considers to be the best agent. He starts to suspect that there is something wrong with Antonín.

Awards

The film gained 13 nominations for Czech Lion. It received 5 of them - Best film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Actor in Leading Role. Film also received The Film Critics' Award.

Walking Too Fast also succeeded at Czech Film Critics Awards. The film was awarded in categories Best film, Best director, Best Screenplay, est Actor in Leading Role and RWE award.

Reception

The film won universal acclaim from critics in the Czech Republic. Out of all Czech films Walking too fast is number one on Czech movie aggregator Kinobox.cz wher it holds 87% from critics.[3] František Fuka considers it to be the best Czech film in a few last years if not the best since the Velvet revolution. The film also gained positive reception from audience.it currently holds 74% on Czecho-Slovak Film Database.[4]
