Wagholi (Marathi: वाघोली) is a notable place in Satara District of Maharashtra State, India. This town is situated in the north Koregaon region. This place has been playing very important role in the political, economic, social, cultural, and educational field of Koregaon Taluka and Satara District. In this town there are many citizens who are serving at high posts such as in the field of politics, education, agriculture, defence, social services, etc. There are many citizens and youngsters of Wagholi serving as doctors, engineers, lawyers, police, professors, businessmen, and agriculturalists. The literacy rate of this town is above 93%.

Government

The town follows the Gram Panchayat governing system in which the sarpanch is the democratically elected head of the town. Talathi and Gramsevak are servants who assist the Sarpanch to progress the Town. Politics are dominated by the Bhoites since the independence of India, but when reservation occurs other people receive government authority.

History

Wagholi was historically ruled by a leading Maratha clan from the lineage of the Suryavanshi Kshatriya, named Bhoite. Bhoites were Deshmukhs of Pargana(Taluka) Wagholi in the Prant Wai.[1] Wagholi was an important town of Raygad Ghera along with nearby Phaltan which were centres of prominent ruling chiefs of Chhatrapati Shivaji.[2] The Bhoites and Wagholi residents were active in the anti-British movements for freedom of India.[3] The Wagholi used to be referred to as Sammat in the names of other villages because in history of Marathas Sammat word denotes Sarkar or Pargana Under Bahamani Sultanates.[4] The oldest village of Bhoite named Tadawale termed to be Tadawale Sammat Wagholi i.e. Tadawale under Pargana Wagholi. The Bhoites being rulers of Sammat Wagholi were rendered as Sarsammat(Chief of Sammat) under Deccan Sultanates.

People

  • Marathas :

The majority of Wagholi residents are Bhoite, a leading Maratha clan, brother branches of the inhabitants of Tadawale Sammat Wagholi(Koregaon) and Hingangaon(Phaltan). There are wide varieties of 96 clans of Marathas such as Shinde-Sarkar from Asangaon, etc., who are relatives of Bhoites.

The other people of the town are Brahman, Matang, Dhangar, Chambhar, Muslim, Neo-Buddhist and so including NT, (Castes like Dhangar, Ramoshi, etc.) and OBC (Other Backward Castes) and Raut.

Occupation

Mr. B. Y. Bhoite was the the well known politician born in Wagholi who was elected in panchayat samiti election, director of Jarandeshwar sugar factory. He did politics to help poor and needy people. After him Mr. Shahaji Bhoite(son of B.Y. Bhoite) is continuing his politics successfully. Mr. Shahaji Bhoite is dashing, dynamic, aggressive politician who initially become Sarpanch in Wagholi then after sanchalak in Jarandeshwar sugar industry and currently he is sanchalak in Koregaon Kharedi wikri sangh. His political path is very progressive and he is having hold at district level.

Grape agriculture is done on a large scale, In addition locals serve in government and military positions, and Wagholi residents are involved in regional politics. Mr. Narayan Rangrao Bhoite and his son Mr. Ashokrao (Director, Maharashtra Rajya Draksha Bagaitdar Sangh, Pune) Mr.Prakash is the one of the first families to start grapes cultivation.

The late Aanadibai Pandurang Bhoite (after married) Smt. Aanadibai Shankarrao Shinde's son an agriculturist Mr. Vilasrao Shankarrao Shinde-Sarkar his son agriculturist Mr. Shivaji {B.Sc} & Mr. Prabhakar {M.A.LL.B} and rest family is one of the first families to start strawberry agriculture. Today, Shinde-Sarkar family exports strawberries to Mahableshwar, Kerala, Pune, Chennai, Surat, Tamilanadu & Karnataka as well as Andhra Pradesh. They export grapes to America, Europe, Thailand, Malaysia, etc.

The main occupation of the village is agriculture where agriculturists like Shri. Sudamrao Amrutrao Bhoite, Bhalerao Bhoite & Ravindra Bhoite (all three are the sons of Amrutrao Balasaheb Bhoite of Wagholi) wer the first farmers that started cultivating grapes in the village from 1989 and also the first farmers to start the cultivation of Termaric.

Nilesh Shivaji Bhoite is a young, dynamic farmer in the village. He has developed his farm with the help of drip irrigation due to shortage of water.

Education

Many Wagholi residents attend school in nearby communities such as Wathar, Satara, Pune, or at larger regional or national institutions. Vidyanagar is a main place, where schools and colleges are situated. Vidyanagar is situated from 1 km. away from Wagholi.

Transport

The main means of transport is government buses of M.S.R.T.C. (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation) and also some private taxis, small vehicles, and trucks. Locals often ride bicycles.
