History

WVTS-FM

Former WZJO-FM logo

WVTS-FM was formerly Charleston's only Alternative rock radio station. Then WZJO, Z Rock made its debut in 2003. Before that, WZJO was an urban oldies station. The last two call letters of the callsign stood for Jammin Oldies. The station is owned by Bristol Broadcasting Company, with a "twin station" in Elizabethton, Tennessee named "Z Rock-99-3", also owned by Bristol Broadcasting. According to Bristol Broadcasting, the station posts strong numbers with 18 to 35 year old men. WVTS-FM shares a tower with WBES in Dunbar.

  • The station's callsign was WBES-FM from 1988 until 2001.
  • On November 1. 2009, the station began airing continuous Christmas themed music, renaming themselves “Christmas 94.5”. The theme continued until January 1, 2010, at which time the station departed from the Z-ROCK name and genre and switched to news/talk, simulcasting WVTS 950 AM as the new WVTS-FM.
