WT05 (branded as Toledo 5, The CW) is the CW-affiliated television station for Northwest Ohio, primarily serving the city of Toledo. Owned as the flagship television outlet of Block Communications (owners of the Toledo Blade and Buckeye CableSystem), it was originally exclusive to Buckeye CableSystem subscribers, but its carriage has since expanded to other northwestern Ohio cable providers such as Time Warner Cable and Comcast.
As a cable-only service, WT05 is carried on channel 5 on Buckeye CableSystem, Time Warner Cable and Comcast. It should not be confused with religious broadcaster WLMB, which carries their over-the-air digital signal on VHF channel 5 and maps their channel via PSIP to their analog channel 40, nor WBTL-LP (channel 34), which formerly broadcast over VHF channel 5.
Despite being a cable-only affiliate of The CW, the station is not part of The CW Plus; programming responsibilities for syndicated series and films seen on the channel outside of The CW's network programming hours are instead handled by Block Communications.
History
WT05 began broadcasting on August 7, 1989, about three years after WUPW became the Fox affiliate for Northwest Ohio. The channel was originally branded as "ToledoVision 5" (though it was listed in local editions of TV Guide as "TV5"). The channel originally aired on Buckeye Cablesystem's channel 5A, when the cable provider transmitted its cable channels over a dual-coax system. At the time of the channel's sign-on, Toledovision 5 broadcast its programming daily from 5 p.m. to 12 midnight, with Travel Channel broadcasting over the channel space at other times. The station joined The WB as a charter affiliate in 1995.
On January 24, 2006, CBS Corporation and Time Warner announced that they would shut down their respective networks, The WB and UPN that fall. In place of these networks, the two companies would form a new service called The CW Television Network, which would combine the most-watched programs from both UPN and The WB with new series produced specifically for the network.[1] WT05 became an affiliate of The CW on September 18, 2006.
Programming
Syndicated programs on WT05 currently include Rules of Engagement, The Wendy Williams Show, That '70s Show, Friends, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. Despite not having to follow the guidelines due to its status as a cable-only channel, the channel also complies with the FCC's E/I guidelines with three hours of compliant educational children's programming on Saturday mornings and afternoons. Over the years, the station has carried various Toledo area sporting events including Toledo Mud Hens minor league baseball, and University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University football and basketball, to the point that Buckeye Cablesystem launched a regional all-sports network, Buckeye Cable Sports Network (BCSN) on January 7, 2004.
