WMXJ (102.7 FM, "Magic 102.7") is a classic hits music formatted radio station that broadcasts from Miami Gardens, Florida. The station is owned by Lincoln Financial Media, which was previously known as Jefferson-Pilot Communications.
History
WRBD-FM, then WCKO-FM, has been on the air since the early 1970s. WCKO originally had a soul/R&B format it was the sister station of long time AM R&B leader in Broward County WRBD 1470. In late 1977 WCKO changed it moniker to K-102 and switched to an automated disco format. In 1979 K-102 changed formats again, to a tight rotation of rock hits with DJs Buddy Hollis, Bo Walker, Alan Michaels, Tom Stevens and Geoff Allen. By late 1980 K-102 had made a dent into WSHE's dominance of South Florida rock audience, Zeta-4 had slipped to the number three rock station in the market and was about to switch to a top 40/CHR format due to the fact WMJX 96-X was losing its FCC license. At this time K-102 was calling itself "South Florida Hottest Rock"[citation needed]. In early 1982 K-102 began playing a new wave format and calling itself K-102 Rock of the Eighties which infringed on copyright violations. KROQ-FM owned that moniker at the time. In 1983 K-102 was playing an album oriented rock format programmed by broadcaster Neil Mersky. This lasted until the station was sold.
In 1983 the station was purchased by Sconnix Broadcasting which dropped the WCKO call letters to WMXJ-FM, changed the format to adult contemporary and upgraded the signal, moving the station to the master antenna system serving South Florida, the result of another station moving from 92.1 to 92.3. In 1988 the station migrated to a full time oldies format and dominated the key 25-54 demographic through 1991.
In 1994 WMXJ was sold to Jefferson-Pilot Communications (now Lincoln Financial Media).
On August 2, 2012 WMXJ rebranded as "Magic 102.7". Lincoln Financial Media’s Classic Hits “Majic 102.7” WMXJ Miami has relaunched its format under new Program Director Sam Zniber. The station’s name has been slightly adjusted from “Majic” to the normal “Magic” with the city of Miami being emphasized over the station’s frequency. Positioning shifts from “Classic Tracks Of The 60s, 70s, and 80s” to “Miami’s Greatest Hits”. The playlist has been widened to include more Classic Rock tracks, limited 60s music and a fair amount of 80s. The station’s personalities have been shuffled as well. Night host Vance Phillips and midday-er Mindy Lang have moved to mornings. Joe Johnson, who had been in mornings takes over the 10am-3pm midday slot. Since the changes Magic 102.7 is up 85% in the ratings[citation needed].
