History

WMUM-TV signed on January 1, 1968 on channel 15 as WDCO-TV. In 1990, the station changed its UHF frequency from channel 15 to channel 29, so as to avoid interference to a Department of Defense early warning ballistic missile detection facility located at the Warner Robins Air Force Base. This was the only time prior to the 2009 digital conversion that a GPB station swapped channels. In the summer of 2006, the station changed its call sign to WMUM-TV, named after Mercer University in Macon. The name change reflects Mercer's involvement in GPB's operations in the Macon market, especially in the field of radio (see WMUM-FM).
