WLVT-TV, UHF digital channel 39, is a PBS member television station located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, United States. The station is owned by the Lehigh Valley Public Telecommunications Corporation. WLVT maintains studios located in the south side of Bethlehem, and its transmitter is located south of nearby Allentown atop South Mountain.

Overview

The station first signed on the air on September 7, 1965 as a member station of National Educational Television (NET), and eventually joined PBS at its inception in 1970. It is the smallest PBS member station in the state of Pennsylvania, serving a coverage area of 600,000 people. However, since the Lehigh Valley is part of the Philadelphia television market, it is carried on cable providers in much of eastern Pennsylvania and western and parts of southern New Jersey. It is also available throughout the Philadelphia market via the DirecTV satellite service.

WLVT also broadcasts Scholastic Scrimmage, a popular academic quiz show featuring students from Pennsylvania high schools as contestants. Around the 1980s and 1990s, WLVT had many underwriters for almost every program broadcast by the station; among them included Crayola LLC, Just Born, Chrysler First Financial Services, Stanley/Vidmar, Bethlehem Steel, Hill Financial Savings, Muhlenberg College, Air Products & Chemicals, WDIY (88.1 FM), the Diocese of Allentown, Keystone Nazareth Bank and Trust, UGI Utilities and Capital Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

In 2012, WLVT-TV relocated to a new studio facility on the south side of Bethlehem, adjacent to the SteelStacks complex.

Analog-to-digital conversion

WLVT shut down its analog signal, over UHF channel 39, on January 31, 2009. The station's digital signal relocated on its pre-transition UHF channel 62, which was among the high band UHF channels (52-69) that were removed from broadcasting use as a result of the transition, to its former analog-era UHF channel 39.^[3]
