WLGX (100.5 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a 90's hits music format. Licensed to Louisville, Kentucky, USA, the station serves the Louisville area. The station is currently owned by Clear Channel Broadcasting Licenses, Inc. and features programing from Premiere Radio Networks.[1] The station is also broadcast on HD radio.[2] The station, having such a rare and unique format, draws listeners from a larger area than most radio stations usually do. For example, there are a significant number of people in the neighboring Lexington market who listen to the station, because it provides them with the music they grew up listening to in the 1990s.
History
The station was assigned call letters WTFX on June 28, 1991. On April 19, 2002, the station changed its call sign to WTFX-FM, on August 19, 2005 to WLUE, and an application was filed as of September 3, 2009, to change the call sign to WLGX.[3]
This station initially signed on with a classic rock format, which shifted more towards mainstream rock and then active rock by 2002. In 2005, the station shifted to a classic hits leaning variety hits format, called Louie FM. On September 3, 2009, in response to slipping market share, the station decided to shift towards a 90's pop/rock centered offering called Gen X Radio. According to a press release which was issued hours before the format change, the station promises to feature music from "grunge, hip-hop, hair bands and boy bands".
At 3pm on Nov 11, 2011, Gen X Radio dropped their 90's Hits format for Christmas Music, leaving listeners unsure of whether their Gen X format would return after the Christmas season or not. However, as the station had promised, the format returned after the holidays. In 2013, it happened again except for having it play alongside the regular music, this time with the station airing a separate webstream of its full format under the same name on IHeartRadio, likely meaning the station's format will return after the holidays.
