WJDI (1620 kHz AM) is a pirate radio station. It was located in Cottekill, New York from 1989 to 1996. It was one of the more successful pirate stations during the 1980s.
History
It began its broadcast on January 1, 1989. It played a variety of music during its full existence. The announcer says they are "broadcasting with 1,000 clear watts". However, 2 years later, its power increased to 2,500 watts. It was known as "The Pirate King". The announcer behind WJDI was Dave Schneider.
Despite being a pirate radio, the station was a member of the National Radio Club. It was broadcasting with an actual AM broadcast band transmitter (not a 160 meter amateur rig). From 1989 - 1995, the final tube was a 4CX15000J and the modulators were 3000A7s driven with a FET modulation driver. From 1995 - 1996, the final tube was a 4-1000a and the modulators were 810s. It remained on until final close-down on December 25, 1996, when W.A. Merriman heard WJDI on the Shortwave band and it was reported that its power was 15,000 watts.
