WITR (89.7 FM) is a student-run broadcast radio station in Henrietta, New York. It is a college radio station,[1] owned by the Rochester Institute of Technology. It was assigned the WITR call letters by the Federal Communications Commission.[2] Its signal can be heard 25 miles south of the RIT campus, and north into the city of Rochester. The office and studios are located in the A-Level (basement) of the Student Alumni Union just past the RITZ Sports Zone.
WITR is well-regarded in the independent music industry and sports a formidable variety of genres, in addition to its regularly-scheduled indie music format. Weekly shows are produced locally by students or community members and feature the following genres: world, hip-hop, R&B, rock, modern metal, hardcore, disco, house, jazz, ska, punk rock, Spanish/Latin, reggae, electronica, gospel, blues, news, classical, punk, and glam. Over 70 members comprise the volunteer staff of WITR.
The station broadcasts all RIT Tigers men's ice hockey games as part of the RIT Sports Network.
WITR's vinyl record library is the second largest in New York State. In 1992, the count was estimated at 30,000 records and 5,000 CDs. Those numbers have continued to grow ever since. In March 2010, the station unveiled a new logo and branding, changing from "Modern Music and More" to "The Pulse of Music".[3]
