WEST brewery is located in the Templeton Building on Glasgow Green. WEST produce German Style lagers and wheat beers, both in kegs and bottles, selling primarily to the UK market. All WEST lagers and wheat beers are brewed in strict accordance with the 1516 Reinheitsgebot, the ancient German Purity Law.
Background
WEST brewery opened in March 2006, serving beer made in its Glasgow Green microbrewery to customers in the adjoining beer hall. WEST was born out of Managing Director Petra Wetzel's belief that Scotland deserved a Premium lager to be proud of.[1]
Since its original conception as a German style brewpub, WEST has developed into a nationally recognised brand and distributes its draught and bottled beers widely throughout the UK.
Future
WEST is currently in the process of building a new state-of-the-art brewery in Port Dundas, North Glasgow. Having received £1.85 million in funding support from the Scottish Government, the new WEST Centre of Brewing Excellence will increase brewing capacity twenty-fold.[2]
Beer
All WEST beers are brewed in strict accordance with the 1516 Reinheitsgebot, the ancient German Purity Law which allows only malted barley, hops, yeast and water to be used in the brewing process. This means that all WEST products are free from chemicals, preservatives, and any other additives, and are all suitable for vegans.
Core WEST Beers
Name | ABV (%) | WEST Description |
---|---|---|
St Mungo | 4.9 | Named after the patron saint of Glasgow and fellow brewer, this is our flagship Premium lager. St Mungo is a hybrid between a true Bavarian Helles and a Northern German Pils, which makes for a complex yet very drinkable Premium lager. Its natural carbonation and firm crisp taste perfectly counters its malty body. Clean, crisp, and refreshing. |
WEST 4 | 4.0 | The lightest lager we serve. Brewed with aromatic hops only, its balance of bitter and sweet flavours perfectly complements its zesty finish. |
Hefeweizen | 5.2 | Just like it is brewed in Bavaria, our house wheat beer is a fruity and refreshing mix of imported malt, hops and fresh yeast. |
Munich Red | 4.9 | Brewed to our own unique recipe, this Munich style red lager uses a high proportion of toasted malted barley, which gives the beer its unique colour, smooth and creamy body, and sweet biscuity flavour. This is a lager that may convert even the staunchest ale aficionado. |
Seasonal WEST Beers
Name | ABV (%) | WEST Description |
---|---|---|
Wild West | 4.9 | This hazy golden lager is the unfiltered twin of our ever popular St Mungo. With more body and some bitter and yeasty notes, Wild WEST is a Premium lager which finishes with a little more bite. |
Dunkel | 4.9 | Dunkel is German for dark and this is our take on a traditional dark German lager. With a dense and creamy head this beer has a distinctive malty flavour and a smooth, clean finish. |
WEST Black | 4.6 | With a smooth dark body and creamy long lasting head, WEST’s first stout sits like a pint of fresh espresso. With a fudgy aroma and bold smoky flavours reminiscent of a French roast coffee, WEST Black is one to take time over and notice the flavour profile change as the temperature slowly increases in the glass. |
In the WEST bar on Glasgow Green, the four core beers are always available on draught alongside seasonal options. These can also be purchased to take home direct from the tap in 1 litre refillable bottles.
St Mungo is currently the only WEST beer available in bottles. It is retailed by Waitrose nationwide[3] and can also be purchased from independent off-licenses and directly from the brewery bar.
