W3Schools is a web developer information website, with tutorials and references relating to web development topics such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL, and JQuery.
The site derives its name from the abbreviation for the World Wide Web; W3 is a numeronym of WWW. W3Schools is not affiliated with the W3C.[1]
It is created and owned by Refsnes Data, a Norwegian family-owned software development and consulting company.[2]
The site provides a reference manual covering many aspects of web programming, including technologies such as HTML, XHTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, PHP, ASP, SQL etc.
W3schools presents thousands of code examples. By using the online editor provided, readers can edit the examples and execute the code experimentally.
Criticism by W3Fools
W3Fools, a site launched in 2011, has criticized W3Schools, claiming the site contains inaccurate information that would mislead beginners and harm the web development community, as well as for providing certificates "whose value is highly debatable". The site also criticized W3Schools for failing to indicate that it was not affiliated with the W3C. The site lists many examples of inaccuracies found on W3Schools although some claims of those inaccuracies themselves are debatable.[3]
W3Schools has responded to this criticism, saying, they always appreciate suggestions on improving W3Schools and claimed to have fixed some, if not all, of the mentioned issues, although still not acknowledging on their front page that they are not associated with the W3C.[4]
