VyOS is a fork of the Vyatta CE edition of routing software. VyOS is a Linux based routing solution built on the Debian Linux distribution, and currently runs on i386 and X86_64 bit platforms.

VyOS provides a free and open source routing platform that competes directly with other commercially available solutions from well known Network providers. VyOS is unique in that it run on any x86 based hardware in 32 bit or 64 bit. Because of this ability the VyOS software is able to be used as a the router and firewall platform for cloud deployments.

History

After Brocade Communications stopped development of the Vyatta Core Edition of the Vyatta Routing software, a small group of enthusiasts took the last Community Edition, and worked on building an Open Source version to live on in place of the end of life VC. [1] [2]

Releases

VyOS version 1.0.0 (Hydrogen)[3] was released on December 22, 2013.[4] This release is built on Debian Squeeze and is available as a 32-bit image for physical machines (i386), a 64-bit image - both physical and virtual (amd64), and a 32-bit image for virtual machines (i386-virt).[5]
